The Koronus Expanse is a trove of lost archeotech and Xenotech, and with the neighbouring Calixis Sector empowered to grant limited Warrants of Trade for the sole purpose of exploiting the lost treasure troves granted therein. For services rendered to the Adeptus Mechanicus, Lord-Captain Tiberius Kayne has been granted a small commission to explore and retrieve technologies on behalf of the Priests of Mars, as well as two ancient void ships commissioned for the sole purpose of furthering their joint ventures. The Dynasty’s first venture was to inspect the colony of Egarian Omega, a Xenotech dig that was initially financed by Aspyce Chorda, but with the growing war with the Orkish menace assaulting Winterscale’s Realm she has been consolidating her interests to better protect her core assets, an opportunity opened up to buy some more profitable interests.
The Dynasty made its arrival in orbit in the Hammer of Kayne, quickly establishing communication with the trio of Chorda vessels defending the planet and the colony itself and made planetfall. Captain Kayne led his senior advisory personnel down to the planet. Admiral Remy Abrinovitch, Confessor Darius Shryver, and Spymaster Xose Arturro were all on hand, as well as a small contingency of troops, to inspect the colony, determine whether or not it could turn a profit, and steal anything of value in case it could be worthwhile later. Met at the landing bay by Overseer Leerus, local representative of the mining operations.
The initial tour briefed the crew on the output of the dig so far, and the potential exciting discoveries. Although Leerus tried his best to sell the colony, the initial sell made it clear that in terms of actual profitability, there had yet to be any significant – or profitable – discoveries made. Sensing the crew’s waning interest, Leerus introduced the crew to Artificer Boran, the local overseer of the Adeptus Mechanicus ensuring compliance with the laws of the Omnissiah. The Rogue Trader and Void Master accepted the offer to go into artifact storage to view the more in-depth research that had been conducted, while Confessor Shyrver moved off to preach directly to the people of the colony.
The artifact storage was slightly more promising, in that the Egarian crystals composing the bulk of the Maze City beneath appeared to have been synthesized and combined into Imperial technology producing a noteworth improvement in equipment. Grenades and melee weapons both showed a marked increase in destructive capability, as demonstrated both on training dummies and a few of the more indolent indentured servants. However, the Void Master picked up on a potential weakness, in that the production would require a significant amount of time to refine, and also continous access to Egarian maze cities themselves. Leerus excused himself to deal with an administrative problem, leaving the pair alone with the Magos. The captain feigned an interest in the history of the Egarian society, successfully distracting the Tech-Priest while Abrimovitch stole as much technology and downloaded as many files as possible.
Confessor Shryver took this opportunity to break away from the group to go and preach the Emperor’s word directly to the indentured servants. Despite the guards’ attempts to stop him, his massive Laud Hailer echoed the word of the Emperor throughout the camp, gathering a following who – while urged behind the scenes by Arturro’s encouragement as part of the crowd – showed signs of hope for the first time ever at the news that someone was paying attention to them for reasons beyond simple manual labour. Their ardour was so great that they failed to listen to the content of Shryver’s words, convincing them that their certain deaths working at the colony was in the Emperor’s name. Equal parts enthusiastic and confused, the servants went back to their hab blocks with an improved attitude for the dynasty.
Further investigation of the camp had the Confessor become convinced that the AdMech were hiding important artifacts from the crew, but was unable to make any firm confirmations. Spymaster Arturro interrogated the mercenaries, and learned that several of them had been vanishing in unexplained circumstances, and strange Xenotech had been unexpectedly found. As the Dynasty met up to compare notes, a great siren sounded throughout the camp indicating an incoming Xenos attack, and they quickly learned that Chorda’s ships had retreated rather than face off against the oncoming horde.
While Leerus and the Adeptus Mechanicus retreated deeper into the Maze City, the Explorers led the defense of the research expedition personally. Manning the defenses they watched the strange Xenos land and charge towards them, hideous insect like creatures far larger than any man – which they would later learn were the Rak’Gol. The defense was hard fought, but through personally battling this foe as well as inspiring and arming all workers, they did manage to hold the line. Following the defense, they intended to storm the maze city and drag Leerus out, but their attempts were interrupted by a huge, psychically active Rak’Gol charging out of the city, its claws and fangs wet with blood from the broken bodies of those who tried to hide inside.
Though possessed of strange, unknowable powers, the adventurers led in no small part by Confessor Shryver’s flamer managed to defeat the latest creature, and with all off-world personnel dead or missing, decided to seize all the resources of the colony, recruit the labourers and mercenaries, and make their exit without wasting their money further. All in all a good first outing for the nascent dynasty… even when days later their research findings were copied by Spymaster Arturro and sent through encoded Astropathic message to the secret patron of the Kayne Dynasty… Leopold Phipps.
